No shade to all those $2.50 Diddy Riese dates from freshman year, but at a certain point, you will meet a special someone worth sweeping off their feet. One advantage of going to school in a city as sprawling and dynamic as LA is that it’s virtually impossible to run out of things to explore. When you find someone who prefers culture over keg stands, we’ve got you covered:
If you’re in need of some midterm laughs, head to Upright Citizens Brigade or the Largo for some comedy. With two locations in Hollywood — the original on Franklin, the new venue on Sunset, UCB is legendary on both coasts for its highly affordable and hilarious improv shows featuring household names and up-and-comers side by side. If you’re more of a comedy nerd looking to splurge, check out the upcoming performances happening at The Largo on La Cienaga. Get on the mailing list for tips on big names who schedule at the last minute.
If your date is into art, go see the Infinity Mirrors at The Broad downtown. Yes, those Infinity Mirrors you’ve seen all over social media. We can tell you first hand that this Yayoi Kusama exhibit truly lives up to the hype. Wander through a half a dozen kaleidoscopic rooms with no shortage of epic photo-ops, then explore the permanent collection upstairs featuring modern art greatest hits like Basquiat and Koons. Yes, the real life Koons. Not Snapchat’s lame augmented reality version. Hop over to Cole’s French Dip afterwards, which has been serving up sandwiches in Downtown LA since 1908.
People always say on dating apps that they are looking for “adventure.” If you are truly the adventurous type and it appears that your date is as well, consider exploring the abandoned Old Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park. Rich in history and spooks, this short hike will take you through one of LA’s most off-the-beaten track trail of ruins. If you’re hungry after the hike, head to Casita Del Campo in Silverlake for a margarita and a delicious plate of Mexican food.
If you can’t get tickets to the Museum of Ice Cream, head over to Smorgasburg LA, for some exotic eats in the highly Instagrammable Downtown Arts District. The pop-up which market features dozens of food vendors you won’t want to miss. Shrimp Daddy and Popdup tea happen to be our favorites, but you can’t really go wrong. If the date is progressing nicely, consider taking things up a notch with a visit to the OUE Skyspace observation deck nearby, where you can take in panoramic views of Downtown 1,000 feet off the found.
